Here’s thing I bought back in February to commute on. Otherwise, mostly just been working. We never shut down through all this. Extra precautions and furloughed employees, but I’ve stayed working five days a week. And now some of the protesting and looting has been dangerously close to our shop. Really hoping we don’t get hit. Anyways, I have lots of interesting posts to make, I just need to get around to it!

I seem to be swinging back and forth between over-exercising and over-drinking. I need this Goddamn year to be over!
Nice Salsa.
I’m doing a resto-mod on an old steel Bianchi. I’ve stripped it down to the frame. It’s going to get a re-paint and get some modern components on it. Classic steel frame with STI shifters and aero wheels. Should be fun.

Picked it up last year and used it a bunch. It's been excellent. Tilting it down and back up isn't the easiest, despite just being a pin that you slide in and out, it's a tight fit. But it's super solid over rough roads and doesn't make any noise at all.

This is my first foray into road bikes, though it's technically called a gravel bike. So I don't really know what you're talking about but it sounds fun! Mountain bike stuff? I got you. But road? Not so much lol

Well ITA97 decided you have good taste in bikes: I bought a thing. (though I see you discovered that yesterday)
I meanwhile just bought the first thing on Craigslist that looked good to me: New (to me) wheels

I’ve always kinda liked 90's Saab's and have looked at a few myself. Enjoy!

I got this in March. A 2019 Stump Jumper Pro. Similar to the S works but with a GX kit instead of the XX1 kit.It cost a few dollars.

I just use it for commuting, but being technically classified as a gravel bike I'm not afraid of the occasional dirt path and riding off of curbs. Road bikes seem too sensitive to imperfect surfaces for me. But I'll never actually use this for actual gravel or CX stuff. I've got a full suspension bike for real terrain.

Because I want to stay married?
Still, I could totally rock a road bike with side car. I’d take my girls out for rides on it. Every time I say that out loud, my daughter’s eyes sparkle, and my wife’s roll.

I’ve used mine mostly for road rides, but I’ve also done some dirt/gravel irrigation ditch bank riding. Not nearly as comfortable as a real suspension mtb on bumps and washboard , but works fine enough. It’s nice enough on the road that I can ride the miles to those ditchbanks and home instead driving there with it on a carrier.

No repaint! Have someone lightly brush it and do a vinyl wrap(!) or leave it as is . Almost nobody, trust me you aren’t going to pay what quality costs, does a decent job repainting bikes .
The most important part of the project should be a detailed cleaning inside the frame before doing an exceptional job applying framesaver. Full commitment or leave it as is.
Before building it up it might be a good idea to have a bike shop see if either headtube or bottom bracket need facing/chasing. You could also e xplore the highly suggested idea of using a quill 1" to 1 1/8" adapter with modern aluminum bar/stem. Also keep in mind most modern wheels are going to be wide if you shop those.

All good points. This is a mid-level bike with a beater paint job, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a respray, so I’m going to try it myself.
If it turns out awful, I’ll just ride it a few years and get it repainted professionally. But it isn’t some high-end frame that should be stuck in a museum.
I’ve been cleaning out the inside as best a I can with a bottle brush and spraying the insides of the tubes with Boeshield frame saver. It’s cleaning up nicely.
I’ve got a new Shimano Italian threaded bottom bracket and Chris King threaded headset on the way, so I’ll make sure the frame is ready to go before putting them on.
I’m also going to cold set the rear triangle from 126mm to 130mm for my 10 speed wheels. I have the park tool frame alignment gauge and the derailleur alignment tools, so hopefully those will help ensure the chainstays are good to good to go after I manhandle them.
I’ve also got a new titanium quill stem that fits a 1 inch threaded headset, but has a handlebar diameter for new 31mm bars, instead of the old 26mm bars, so I can use my favorite PRO Verve bars with it.
My main concern is that I’m short and since it’s a traditional horizontal frame, I’m not going to have much seatpost showing. It shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but it’s a different aesthetic than new, sloping top tube frames with tons of seatpost showing.

Great bike but that price still hurts because of what you don’t get. Like non-house branded carbon wheels of quality equal to capability of rest of the bike.

Correct, t hose bikes should only have a fistful of post showing.
Cold setting is... when you drop it off to see if it needs facing/chasing have the mech give you a professional opinion on how safe doing it yourself is v. have a framebuilder (you are already going to repaint it) weld in a wider brake bridge and get the frame utterly straight with modern O.L.D. BB or brake bridge welds cracking is not fun. Nor is fixing improper offset even with a frame table. Not saying no, just knowing enough to do it right.
What color(s) are you going to paint it? My vote would go for Celeste with a raw steel logo in the vintage design below. Easy enough to print and stencil it on the frame with something impermeable to paint. Maybe spring for a head badge it if doesn’t have one. Always a good look using one of those.
Italian bikes are all about personal style and not caring what anyone thinks about it. I’ve rolled up alongside five figure bikes on a low end vintage Italian bike to no less appreciation than being on a new race bike . Che bella!

Yea, Celeste is cool, but I’m going to try and keep a lot of the original paint.
Here’s a pic of someone else’s mint 87 Bianchi limited to show the black and red color scheme. It looks pretty nice! I’ll post some pics after it’s done.

Oh no, man. I got it. I was being tongue in cheek. No worries!
I occasionally run into this other middle aged guy on my lake runs. He rides the same bike, but he’s not disabled. He just does it for fun. He asked me why I didn’t go for the e-assist option. Where I am in flat terrain, I prefer to make my arms do the work. But if I rode in upstate New York like he sometimes does, I think I might need it to negotiate some of those mountains and still have fun.

Road carbon wheels are still anathema to my interests . MTB have begun to look quite good. You can take it a move back to elevation would have to include a mtb with some mounted.

I wouldn’t touch Chinese carbon no name brand rims or anything designed for light weight with carbon rims. I think this model has been out for a few years and I know several people who have put them through the ringer with excellent reliability. I mean we are always cautious when new things come out and sometimes that is warranted but I feel very safe on these over built wheels.
This is what I put on my hard tail. They were hand laced in the shop to my specifications. 14/15 butted spokes and alloy nipples but 32 hole 3x pattern.

Ha, I was just thinking it had been a while since you posted. I’m planning on getting a bike soon, all this free time and not getting exercise at work is making me antsy, and I haven’t had a bike in 6 or 7 years. Leaning towards a Rocky Mountain Growler 20, but I haven’t gone to a store to try anything out yet.
That’s about all I got, I dunno what’s happened in the last two months, my sense of time is gone. I haven’t posted much anyways

Funny you mention the growler, my shop foreman just bought the 50 version! It’s his first real mountain bike and we’re taking him out for his first real trail ride after work today. We pushed him towards the 50 because the build on the two lower level ones is kind of... cheap as hell. Functional yes, but pretty much every component will need to be upgraded within a year or two. The 50 is a much better starting point, with it's weakest point being the fork, but it's not bad at all and easily upgraded without replacing the whole thing.
